NZ First for Bus Braking & Stability
A new Designline’ low-floor bus completed in May features a New Zealand manufacturing first state-of-the-art braking and stability control system.
The new bus is the first of a fleet of seven manufactured for GoBus, by Designline Bus Pacific Ltd from its Rolleston manufacturing base. GoBus will be operating these new buses in a route starting in Dunedin in a few weeks. The 42 seater bus incorporates a superlight weight chassis and body operating on a 12,000 kg loaded GVM.
The new bus features advanced WABCO’ EBS (electronic braking system) and ESC (electronic stability control) says WABCO application engineering manager’ Tony Cheyne.
“This is state-of-the-art as far as braking and stability control systems go, and is certainly a New Zealand manufacturing first” says Tony.
The WABCO systems deliver a range of benefits including enhanced safety and passenger comfort, reduced frequency and costs of maintenance, safer intelligent braking and stability control.
The integration of the WABCO EBS and ESC systems into the Designline' manufacturing process was undertaken with support from WABCO's New Zealand representatives and system suppliers' Gough Transpecs.

This function enables the braking system to ease pressure out of the front brakes when coming up to a stop. This means the normal ‘nodding’ of the front, which can be very uncomfortable for standing passengers, is very much reduced.
Endurance Brake Integration
Use of this feature means the EBS system first of all calls on the retarder to come into play when braking. If the retarder is powerful enough, even though the driver may be increasing brake pedal travel, the foundation brakes are not actually used. It is only when retardation request from the driver exceeds the retarder capability, that the wheel brakes are actually used. This leads to much improved brake life.
Pad Wear Monitoring
By connecting the internal pad wear sensor in each caliper to the EBS, it is possible for the EBS unit to detect uneven brake wear, and under light braking, redistribute air pressure, to make the brakes with more pad material remaining work harder, resulting in a vehicle that will only need to stop for pad replacement when all pads have worn out. This is not always the case with brake lining replacement.
Electronic Brake System (EBS)
Is the leading edge when it comes to safety currently, and the team involved in this system fitment will attest to the stopping capability this vehicle now has. This is partly due to the Emergency Brake Assist function, which detects an emergency situation by the speed of brake pedal application, and actually applies full braking before the pedal reaches full travel.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
ESC will intervene if there is a danger of rollover, by taking throttle control, and applying brakes to reduce speed as needed. In an understeer or oversteer situation, where the vehicle starts to slide, ESC again takes throttle control, and then applies individual brakes as required to bring the vehicle back under control.
